Kizim Kalbym House

The Kizim Kalbim project proposes a single-family residence for a young family, developed from the initial concept phase through to the technical execution details. The project’s name carries a deeply personal meaning – Kizim Kalbim is a childhood term of endearment that has become a symbol of the profound bond between living and memory.

The site is located within the city limits of Iași, in the Bucium area, on a steeply sloped plot that opens up toward the city, offering generous views and a strong spatial relationship with the surrounding landscape. The urban context is predominantly residential, in close proximity to a heritage zone and a medical facility, requiring particular attention to volumetric and functional integration.

The design process began with a careful analysis of the terrain and the existing building, which was found to have structural deficiencies. It was surveyed and documented in preparation for demolition. In close collaboration with the clients, a clear functional brief was defined – two bedrooms, a habitable attic, exposed pitched roof, and a spacious garage – along with an architectural direction that balances practical needs with formal expression.

The architectural solution responded to the site’s particularities: the presence of a relatively stable plateau within a sloped terrain, the proximity of neighboring buildings, and the site’s scenic potential. The resulting volume reflects a careful balance between contextual integration and the enhancement of city-facing views.

Interior functions are distributed efficiently and coherently, within a flexible, adaptable layout. The extension of the basement – carried out upon the structural engineer’s recommendation – allowed for optimized technical and storage areas, without compromising the overall architectural expression.

Kizim Kalbim House stands as an example of contemporary residential architecture that weaves together contextual sensitivity and a rigorous design process. It is a home that responds to modern living needs while retaining a deeply personal character, becoming an authentic expression of its inhabitants’ identity.
